The first American perfumer Josephine Esther Mentzen was born July the first in 1906 in a poor district of New York, her father was of Tsjecho-Slowakije origin and her mother half Hungarian. Esther studies dermatologie and thanks to her job at a beautspecialist she can finance her study. In the evenings she spend allot of time in the lab of her uncle who is a chemist, here she learns how to prepare a skincream. With the help of her uncle she succeeds to prepare a couple of particular skincreams. The director of the beautyfarm gives her permission to try it on the customers. This becomes a big success. In 1930 she marries with Joseph Lauter and in 1939 they separate. And in 1942 they give each other agian the yes word. Her husband dies in 1982.

She decided to discharge at the beautyfarm, and in 1940 together with her husband Joseph Lauter they set up the firm Estee Lauder. Three years later a spot comes free on the perfumedivision at the famous departmentstore Sack’s at fifth avenue nearby the entrance. The dicide to rent it, although the rents are very high. She does everthing herself. She sells, gives massages en entices customers with special offers as creams with free accesoires for on the toilet table.

This was totally new for luxury department stores and this made her famous. She is getting so busy that she leaves her work to an assistant, so she can travel to give information at ladies clubs and in large department stores in whole America. In 1952 she presents perfumed bathoil with the romantic name youth dew. A year later her first perfume appeared with the same name. This makes her famous for good. In 1968 Estee was launched and in 1969 Azuree and in 1972 Alliage.

These perfumes became a big succes. For the first time in the history there is competition between the perfumeurs of America and France. She remains develop perfumes. In 1964 she launches a male perfume Aramis and in 1973 she brings a private collection on the market what she had disigned for herself. Below this other perfumes of her follow: cinnebar, with linnen, beatiful, tuscany, knowing, havanna en pleasures. New york 2004 on a age of 97 years, Josephine Esther Mentzen passed away through a heartattack.
