Coco Chanel
Biography Chanel Gabriëlle. There is not much to tell about her youth. She was born on 19 August 1883 in the commercial town Saumur in the Loire valley in France in poverty. When she became 12 years old she lost her mother, and her father left her in an orphan home in Corrèze. As a teenager she developed a strong character and a distinct desire to independence and freedom. When she left the boarding school, she became saleswoman in a hat shop in Moulins.
In her spare time she sang in La Rotonde, a concert hall where officers of the closely situated regiment loved to stay. Her repertory consisted of two songs: Ko Ko Ri Ko and Qui Qu’vu Coco (who has seen Coco?). Her admirers nicknamed her Coco. She worked her way up to be the most prominent couturier of the century. We owe to her: perfumes, the Chanel ensemble, the short hairs, the sunbath, the jersey suit, the pliable sweater and the imitation jewellery, which didn’t look cheap or common, in sum, the appearance of the modern woman.
In 1914 she opened a fashion house and in 1916 a couture house in Biarritz; after which she settled in Paris in the Rue Cambon.
Coco Chanel had a very sharp sense of smell. She developed together with the nose Ernst Beaux Chanel No. 5 which she launched in 1921. It was the first composition in which synthetic scents were used, and which became famous. It is still used in the whole world.
In order to exploit the success of Chanel No. 5, she needed money, which she got from Pierre Wertheimer, a prominent businessman in these days. Till 1931 she launched different perfumes, like Chanel no. 22, Cuir de Russie. But due to the war, and the closing down of her fashion house in 1939, she became unproductive for a long time. In 1954 she reopened a new fashion house, at the insistence of her perfume producer and brandowner Wertheimer.
After a difficult start, she once again eventually got success: from 1956 the Chanel ensemble with the famous piping and buttons became an example in the fashion world. On 19 August 1970, at her 87th birthday, she launched, together with the successor of Beaux, S. Henri Robert, Chanel no. 19. A few months, at 10 January 1971, she died. After her death Gaston Berthelot, assistant of Dior, and working form him in New York, was appointed as successor. This took only 4 seasons, and then Ramon Esparza, former employee of Balenciaga, succeeded him. He only lasted for one season.
The patterns of the past were pulled out of the cupboard and two old employees, Jean Cauzubon and Yvonne Dudel (working for at least 25 years), got the supervision. After several internal difficulties, each year the same models appeared. In 1974 the nose Henri Robert launched Cristalle. With this he proved to be a natural at this, but this only appeared to be a flash in the pan. In 1984 Karl Lagerfeld eventually started to work for the house, initially only focussing at the couture line, but when in 1985 his contract with Cloè terminated, he took also charge of pret-a-porter, which Chanel used to call the grocer’s. Coco Chanel of the new nose Jacques Polge was launched, and all records were beaten. In 1996 he could also make out Allure in his name. With the nose Jacques Polge, Chanel produced all perfumes on its own. They used the best jasmin and mayrose of Grasse and surroundings.
At this moment Chanel’s largest perfume plants are located in Compiègne. Chanel is still in the hands of the Wertheimer family. A lot of famous persons were used to promote Chanel, like Catherina Deneuve (in the U.S.) and Carole Bouquet, who personifies the current ideal French woman.
