Christian_Dior born in 1905 in Granville in the northwest of France, followed a diplomat education, but changed his tack and opened an art gallery in 1928. As a consequence of the depression of the Thirties, he went bankrupt. The crisis of 1931 ruined his well-to-do family, and when he returned from a study trip to Russia, he learned that his gallery was bankrupt. Then a time of misery followed: he ate bad, slept at friends on the floor, became ill, and searched for the sun in Southern France. Here he learned weaving and he showed interest in fashion designs. In 1935 he went back to Paris, still penniless, where he sold hats, cloths and accessories to fashion houses.

In 1938 he worked one year for designer Robert Piquet. When the war broke out, he joined the army, and after a French-German cease-fire in 1940 he became assistant of Lucien Lelong , for whom he worked for a couple of seasons. In 1946 he opened his own house, and 11 February 1947 he presented his first collection ‘New Look’: sensational feminine cloths without limitation on materials. The new look which he introduced, makes him famous in the whole world all at once.

Christian Dior opened in 1948 his first boutique in the USA, and in 1954 in London. At that moment he had already 1000 employees working for him in France. In 1955 he appointed his first and only assistant Yves Saint Laurent. Dior got many orders for couture, but also the demand from movie-stars for costume designs increased. In 1957 in Montecatini (Italy) he died at the age of 52, due to a hart-attack. After his death Yves Saint Laurent became his successor. His first collection which he launched, became a national triumph, and his second a disaster. When Laurent joined the army, Marc Bohan took the wheel for a while. This takes from 1960 till 1989.

The present designer at Dior is Gian Franco Ferre . The Dior perfumes department was bought in 1968 by, what later would be called, LVMH . Christian Dior has brought 18 perfumes in all on the market, of which 6 designed by Edmond Roudnitska and by other designers, like Guy Roberts, Jean Louis Sievsaz and Pierre Bourbon. The company has his own factories: one of these can be found in St.-Jean-de-Braye in France.
